How to Deregister Your Vehicle in India — Step-by-Step Guide

  • 08 Jun 2025

To scrap a vehicle in India, you must first inform the authorized RTO in writing, stating the reason for scrapping. The original Registration Certificate (RC) and the removed chassis number must be surrendered to the RTO, where they will be retained for records. You also need to submit a deregistration application along with an affidavit confirming there are no outstanding loans, insurance claims, legal disputes, or involvement in any criminal activity. The RTO will verify your documents and cross-check records with their database. Once diligence reports from the traffic police and National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) are cleared, the vehicle will be officially deregistered. After deregistration, the registration number becomes available for reassignment, so it’s essential to inform your insurance provider and cancel the vehicle’s insurance policy.
